Cedar Waxwing

Birds of Southern Ontario

Cedar Waxwing

Cedar waxwings are native to North and Central America. They make their winter home in the southern part of the US but in summer they can be found in Canada, and at the very southern end of Ontario they can stay all year long. I got my first and so far my only look at them a few years ago when over a dozen decided to make a pit stop on one of the apple trees in my backyard. It was amazing, I get so excited whenever I get a glimpse of a bird species I have not seen before, and to have them visit my yard, wow!

If you ever get a chance to see these magnificent birds you will not be disappointed, Cedar waxwings are striking in appearance, they have a black streak running through their eyes with a thin white accent, and a drooping crest on the head. The tail is rather short with a yellow tip. The overall color of the Cedar waxwing is a brownish tan and pale yellowish belly. The wings are grayish. Waxwings are named so because of the red tips on the wing feathers which resemble wax seals. Both males and females look alike.

Cedar waxwings are very social and non territorial birds, they are always seen in flocks, sometimes in the dozens, feeding together, and they do not hesitate sharing food. Their diet consists of berries and various other sugary fruit. In particular, the Cedar waxwing got its name from its delight of eating Red Cedar seed cones. Insects are also part of their diet. Because of their love of fruit they are seen as pests by some farmers whose fruit farms are damaged from large groups coming in for a feast.

Providing water with berry producing plants growing close by could very well catch the attention of these unique looking birds and bring them into your yard as they are quite fond of bathing. Having fruiting trees can also attract them.

Cedar waxwings are considered songbirds, their sound is a high pitched clear but thin series of calls, including trills, often sounded while in flight.

Did you know...?

  • Cedar waxwings are sometimes called Canadian robins, recellets, cedar birds and cherry birds

  • They are fast and can fly at speeds reaching 25 mph or 40 km/h and at an altitude of 2,000 feet or 610 meters

  • A group of waxwings is called an ear-full

  • The Bohemian waxwing is very similar in appearance but a bit larger

  • Waxwings like eating overripe or fermented fruit which can cause them to get a little tipsy

Common Loon

Birds In Canada - Common Loon

Loons On Water

This is an older digital painting of a a pair of loons gliding on water, it is now available at Redbubble on a variety of products besides art prints such as mugs and pillows.

Common Loon Facts

The common loon is also known as the Great Northern Diver. It is found throughout Canada and is often seen on lake waters in cottage country as depicted in my digital painting. Its well recognized sound travels far across waters and is synonymous with the solitude and tranquility of the wilderness

The common loon is the official bird of Ontario (I didn't know that) and is found on the one dollar Canadian coin giving the coin the nickname "loonie" ( Eh, got a loonie?")

The Common loon is a favorite among wildlife artists, there being no lack of paintings featuring this majestic waterbird that makes its home on the lakes of wild.

 Did you know?

Not all owls hoot but those that do, make other sounds as well like chirps and whistles.

There are over 200 species of owls

A group of owls is called a "parliament"

Owls have the ability to fly slower than other birds

Owls are unable to move their eyes in any direction, but to compensate their head can swivel almost all the way around to see what's going on.

Stylized Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

Hummingbird Art
Buy A Hummingbird Art Print

Being the most common hummingbird seen in North American gardens, the Ruby-throated hummingbird may look tiny and delicate but don't let its appearance fool you, like all other hummingbirds it is very territorial and will fight aggressively to defend its space.

During the summer it travels as far north as Canada and in the fall migrates to the warmer climate  of  Central America and Mexico. To attract hummingbirds to your backyard plant tubular flowers in pink or red since those are the colors that get their attention.

The picture accompanying this post is a remade digital painting of an earlier Ruby-throated hummingbird vector drawing. This picture differs mainly in that it is composed of solid colors without any gradients being used. Another change is I added a female hummingbird. Besides being sold as prints in my Imagekind gallery, this composition is also sold on various products from Zazzle such as the coffee mug pictured below:

Cedar Waxwing Art

Waxwings are easily recognized by their distinctive appearance and silky plumage, they get their name from the colorful wax- like "blobs" found on the tips of the secondary wing feathers. There are two species of waxwings in North America, the Bohemian waxwing and the Cedar waxwing.

What's the difference between the Bohemian and Cedar waxwing? The Bohemian waxwing is slightly bigger and is more colorful, with rufous undertail coverts and yellow tips on wing feathers. Cedar waxwings have white undertail coverts. The Cedar waxwing has a yellowish belly while the Bohemian's is dark grayish. Both have a yellow tail tip (sometimes red in Cedar waxwing).

If you spot one of these unique looking songbirds (yes the waxwing is a songbird), chances are that there may be half a dozen or more(a lot more) waxwings perched nearby since they almost always gather in flocks.

How to attract waxwings? By having a yard full of berry producing plants. Although insects are part of the waxwing's diet, they love fruit so a way to get them into your backyard is to plant trees and shrubs that bear small fruit such as as berries found on juniper and serviceberry plants, even strawberries and raspberries!
