Pugs are a popular dog breed in North American homes. And it is no wonder, they are friendly with a gentle touch making them a good choice in households with kids.

Pugs are thought to have originated in China where they were bred as companion animals for the rich, and were brought to Europe in the 16th century. They made their way to North America in the 19th century where they continue to be a popular dog breed.

The unmistakable Pug is easy to recognize with its distinctive flat face, big eyes and curly tail. They are not the most energetic of dogs and feel quite content just laying around snoozing the day away. Being the social butterfly, pugs enjoy human companionship and are eager to please.

After wanting to make a pug to add to my Imagekind gallery of dog posters I finally have one. This computer rendition is based on a watercolor pug portrait I painted not too long ago.

Modern Dog Portraits

I have been experimenting with a new style of dog portraits in watercolor. I'm going for the contemporary modern look that seems to be so pervasive on the internet these days. These portraits I'm painting are in landscape orientation and the pets are painted up close and cropped. The background is also more colorful than the pet portraits that I usually paint.

They are a bit of departure from the watercolor  pet portraits I have been painting through the years but I'm really enjoying making them, the brush strokes are fast and loose, not the usual way of painting for me.
